The happiest flower in the world

For Merel Halderman

The story of the happiest flower in the world doesn’t begin very happy at all. Once upon a time, but not so very long ago, there was this beautiful field of flowers. In this field of flowers grew the prettiest flowers in the world, in all colors, shapes, and sizes. There were about one hundred beautifully red corn poppies. And at least two hundred deep purple violets. In the field also grew dazzlingly beautiful pink lilies, over one hundred and fifty! Spread across the field the grape hyacinths were in full bloom. All in an yellow ocean of buttercups.

In the middle of the field stood one white daisy flower. He was the only daisy in the whole field. The other flowers did not like the daisy. "You do not even have a color," said the red poppies to him. The violets said his form was but ordinary. The lilies told the daisy that his fragrance was not near as nice as theirs. And the daisy was not nearly as tall and ornate as the grape hyacinths. The small white daisy was therefore very sad.

On a beautiful sunny day many visitors came to the field of flowers. All the flowers were in an uproar because they saw many children. Children only picked the most beautiful flowers, everyone knew that. After picking, they were put in a pretty vase in the middle of the table for everyone to be admired. Or they were used as a gift to someone, to show how much they loved somebody. They would be well cared for and pampered: the dream of every flower!

All flowers were doing their best to look as beautiful as possible. The poppies brushed their leaves until they shone. The violets were in their finest form. The lilies made sure their fragrance was even nicer than before. The grape hyacinths made themselves as tall as possible by standing perfectly straight. The buttercups were in the middle of the sun, and it seemed as if they were glowing! But the daisy, he was just sad. He knew he would never be chosen, among all those beautiful flowers. He therefore did not even try his best to look beautiful.

And suddenly there she was: the most beautiful girl the flowers had ever seen! She was so beautiful that everyone was silent for a moment. She had very pretty and soft hair, eyes as beautiful as the shimmering ocean and the sweetest smile that anyone can ever imagine. All the flowers wanted to be picked by her: that would be a great honor!

But the girl walked along the red poppies, past the purple violets, through the yellow field of buttercups directly to the daisy. She knelt down before him.

"Hello," she said, "I am Merel. Who are you? "
The daisy was completely thrown off guard! Was that pretty girl talking to him? "I'm Daisy," said the daisy hesitantly.
"Hello, Daisy," said Merel happily. "May I pluck you?"
The daisy did not know what to say. "But of course! Of course you may! " The daisy replied eventually. "But why me? Do not you prefer a pretty red poppy? Or a beautiful pink lily? "
"No," said Merel "there are a lot of those. Of you there is only one, and that is you. And that makes you even more beautiful and special than all other flowers together. "

The sweet words of Merel caused the daisy to blush, and he turned pink for a brief second. Merel plucked the daisy flower and put him in her soft hair. And how beautiful she looked! She was even more beautiful than a princess.

All other flowers turned to deep red with shame, because they had been so mean to Daisy. "Sorry," said one poppy finally, "you are not at all less beautiful than we are. Can we still be friends?" The daisy happily agreed. He waved goodbye to the poppies, violets, lilies, blue hyacinths and buttercups. All flowers waved Daisy off until he and Merel had disappeared from their sight.

He was truly the happiest flower of the world.
