I got an idea about your commission problem and it is this: you should ask the client what they want, show them a rough sketch or detailed pencil drawing of what the final product will look like and then ask about payment. I think this may be more affective and will stop people saying "oh well that's not what I wanted," or whatever when you've spent hours of hard labour over a peice. I hope that idea helps but if not I apologise.
